The action of its own antibiotic on the producer of imbricin growing on an agarized medium]

The action of imbricin on its own producer Streptomyces imbricatus grown on an agarized medium was studied. Comparatively low concentrations of the antibiotic were shown to have a high lethal action on the streptomycete. The morphological and cultural features of S. imbricatus did not change under the action of imbricin while the variation with respect to the antibiotic production property markedly increased. After the strain exposure to 200 micrograms/ml of imbricin, a stable variant with the antibiotic potency 20 per cent higher than that of the initial organism was isolated.     

Diversity and ecology of algae from the Nahal Qishon river,northern Israel

In 59 samples of periphyton and phytoplankton collected in 2002 - 2003 from the Nahal Qishon (Qishon River), northern Israel, we found 178 species from seven divisions of algae and cyanoprocaryotes. Diatoms, clorophytes, and cyanoprocaryotes prevail. Nitzschia and Navicula (Bacillariophyta) are the most abundant. Most of the species are cosmopolitan or widespread, except Lagynion janei (Chrysophyta), which is endemic for the Mediterranean Realm. About 17% of species (26) are new for Israel and five of them represent the first recorded genera: Crinalium endophyticum Crow, Actinocyclus normanii (Gregory) Hustedt, Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum (Agardh) Kütz (Chlorophyta), Lagynion janei Bourelly, and Stylococcus aureus Chodat. Most of them come from a rare riverine assemblage with red alga Audouinella pygmea, as well as from the estuarine assemblage. Alkaliphiles predominate among the indicators of acidity, with few acidophiles confined to the communities under the impact of industrial wastes. Among the indicators of salinity, most numerous are the oligohalobien-indifferents and species adapted to a moderate salinity level. The relative species richness of ecological groups and the indices of saprobity are correlated with changes in conductivity, pH, and N-nitrate concentration. Indicators of organic pollution fall in the range of betameso- to alfamesosaprobic self-purification grades. Our studies show ecological significance of the Nahal Qishon as a model for a strongly disturbed aquatic ecosystem in the coastal zone of eastern Mediterranean.     

Detection of carotenoids in the vitreous body of the human eye during prenatal development

Carotenoids were found for the first time in the vitreous body of human eye during the fetal period from week 15 until week 28. Their maximum content was timed to week 16-22. No carotenoids were found the vitreous body of 31-week fetuses, as well as adult humans, which corresponds to the published data. It was shown using HPLC that chromatographic characteristics of these carotenoids correspond to those of lutein and zeaxanthin, characteristic pigments of the retinal yellow macula.     

Characterization of the Bellevalia sarmatica (Georgi) woronow populations from Volgograd oblast using molecular genetic identification

DNA samples obtained from the populations of the Red Data Book species Bellevalia sarmatica (Georgi) Worovow from Volgograd oblast were examined using RAPD and AFLP analyses. DNA marking revealed considerable differences in the levels of interpopulation and intraspecific polymorphism of the Bellevalia. Furthermore, RAPD analysis, despite of lower levels of interpopulation polymorphism identified, made it possible to obtain clearer data on population subdivision upon statistical treatment of the results. The results of this study can be used in developing conservation strategies for maintenance of the species abundance and genetic diversity, as well as in elaborating the criteria for construction genetic collections.     

The X-ray absorption spectroscopy Debye-Waller factors of an iron compound and of met-myoglobin as a function of temperature

Protein dynamics can be characterized by the mean square displacements of the individual atoms of a molecule. This concept is extended to X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of proteins where the physical information in the Debye-Waller factor is in general neglected. In a first step, a procedure for the investigation of the temperature dependence of XAS spectra has been developed for a small iron compound. Subsequently, experiments have been performed on met-myoglobin. It is shown that the mean square displacements of XAS are smaller than those obtained by M?ssbauer spectroscopy and far smaller than crystallographic mean square displacements. This behavior is explained by the different sensitivity of the methods. XAS measures a relative mean square displacement between the absorbing and backscattering atoms only. A comparison with mean square displacements calculated from normal modes shows that static displacements contribute significantly. It becomes obvious that the atoms of the active center show a high correlation of their motions.     

Effect of protein-energy deficiency on the composition of the glial population of the mouse neocortex

A quantitative analysis of the cellular elements composition of the neocortex has been performed in 40-day-old mice, that have been given full-bodied synthetic diet (10% of protein) and the diet with the half concentration of the nutritive substances (5% of protein) beginning from the 10th day of their life. The protein-energetic insufficiency during the postnatal period produces retardation in the formation and differentiation processes of oligodendrogliocytes, as well as results in decrease of gliocytesatellites in the neocortex.
